Professor Sylvia Tamale is a leading African feminist and scholar. She was the first female dean at the School of Law at Makerere University in Uganda. She founded the Law, Gender and Sexuality Research Centre at the same university. Prof. Tamale has been a visiting Professor in several academic institutions globally and serves on several international human rights boards. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University, a Masters in Law from Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. in Sociology and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota. She has numerous publications to her name including the groundbreaking book, African Sexualities: A Reader (Pambazuka Press, 2011). Prof. Tamale has won several awards for defending the human rights of marginalized groups such as women, sex workers, LGBTI and refugees.
